Easy Come, Easy Go was Elvis' twenty-third soundtrack album, his 34th and last EP, and his 53rd phonographic release (including LPs and singles). The recording sessions took place on September 28 to 30, 1966, at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, California.
Seven songs were recorded for the film. "She's A Machine" was not used, but would be released on "Elvis Sings Flaming Star" in 1968. The remaining six appeared on the soundtrack EP, released on March 23, 1967, the day after the film. Various sources report that Elvis recorded a vocal version of "Leave My Woman Alone" for the film. This claim is a rumor, as only one instrumental backing track exists.
The album failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, and sold fewer than 30,000 copies in the United States. The British version of the album, however, topped the UK charts, despite featuring only four of the six tracks on the American edition ("The Love Machine" and "You Gotta Stop" were omitted). Given that EPs were no longer a viable marketing medium and the album's poor performance, this was Elvis's last release in the format.
But even before the company had conceived its budget line through RCA Camden at the end of the following year, it was already looking at opportunities in the market outside the United States, especially in countries where Elvis' recordings were difficult to get to and lesser-known songs were rare. Through rights agreements, RCA Victor joined its peers around the world in an effort to capitalize.
Oceania, the world's smallest continent and home to some of the most unusual countries, such as Tonga and Vanuatu, was the first region to receive "Easy Come, Easy Go" in LP format. New Zealand was honored as the first country to receive the new album, followed shortly thereafter by Australia and, later, by the remaining countries on the continent. It was this part of the world that also had the pride of hearing the EP's tracks in stereo for the first time.
To achieve the length and number of tracks appropriate for a long-playing album, RCA Records, the international branch of RCA International, the label's main international sales arm, added six additional tracks from films celebrated on the continent to the content of the American EP. "Tonight is So Right For Love" and "G.I. Blues", from the eponymous 1960 film, open the B-side of the album, followed by "Bossa Nova Baby" and "Vino, Dinero y Amor" from "Fun in Acapulco". "Moonlight Swim" and "Can't Help Falling in Love" from "Blue Hawaii", close the LP.
Having enjoyed considerable success in Oceania, the LP became a rarity and collector's item in other parts of the world from 1968 onwards. RCA only produced a reissue for the European market in 1975, through the Camden budget label, which contained different tracks and had only the title song among the LP's 12 tracks. This version had a wider reach around the world and became common, making the 1967 album an even rarer item.
