Loving You
is the first soundtrack LP by Elvis, who had released the songs from his first film, Love Me Tender, as an EP only. The record spent ten weeks at number one on the Billboard Top Pop Albums and was certified Gold by the RIAA on April 9, 1968.

The soundtrack includes seven songs composed by writers hired by Elvis Presley Music and Gladys Music expressly for the movie "Loving You". An eighth song, "Don't Leave Me Now", intended for production but unused, was included on the album, with a new recording appearing on the soundtrack to his upcoming film, "Jailhouse Rock".

Previously available material comprises both sides of a single released on June 11, 1957 that contained Presley's number-one hit "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear" and the film's title track on the B-side. Producer Hal B. Wallis liked "Teddy Bear" so much that he insisted that it be included in the film.

Songs were added to increase the length of the album, including Swing-era favorite "Blueberry Hill", which had been a big hit for Fats Domino in 1956, "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?" from the group Sons of the Pioneers, and Cole Porter's "True Love", which served as an excuse to use The Jordanaires' backing vocals and present a genuinely romantic song.

RCA's practice of supplementing soundtrack discs with extra songs to give the works acceptable lengths would become a common occurrence during the 1960s.

As the single's reception had been satisfactory above expectations, RCA did not miss the opportunity to earn as much money as possible with the track. In addition to the LP, two EPs (Loving You, Volume 1 and Loving You, Volume 2) were also released on June 20, 1957, which featured four songs from the film each. A third EP (Just For You) was sold starting August 21, 1957 and contained three more extra songs from the LP. "Don't Leave Me Now" was not added this time, being replaced by "Is It So Strange", recorded in the same sessions as the soundtrack.

RCA re-released the original album with 12 tracks on CD in 1988. An expanded edition reached the public on April 15, 1997 with eight extra tracks derived from the same sessions, including "Tell Me Why", which would wait nearly nine years for release, and a remake of the Sun Master "When It Rains, It Really Pours", also released much later, on the 1965 LP Elvis For Everyone.

On January 11, 2005, Sony BMG reissued the remastered album and the following year FTD released their double CD version of the album.

Continuing with the tradition of releasing extended soundtracks with practically all the material from the recording sessions, FTD brought out in January 2006 the double CD of Loving You.

The first CD features the original LP with new bonus Masters. The positive point is that the audio restoration was done by Kevan Budd, which guarantees a perfect sounding disc. These Masters have a warmer, more natural sound than previous releases.

As Ernst Jorgensen noted, it was only recently that he was able to trace an original tape of the 1957 Paramount sessions and they are used here. Not only does this provide a better source, but it also gives us a fabulous new version of "Mean Woman Blues" and an exquisite "Loving You". The first CD contains the tracks:

The second CD has 48 takes of "Loving You": 12 of the "Farm HZ" version, 21 of the "Main KX" version and a replay of the first 15 takes of the "Main KX" version in binaural audio.

While most of the important takes have been previously release, the sound has been much improved since the box set "The King of Rock 'n' Roll: The Complete 50's Masters" and it's an interesting journey to hear the music develop throughout the day. It's also great to hear some new outtakes, and once you've selected your favorite takes, just listen to them carefully. The second CD contains the tracks:

To close the work, FTD provided a booklet entitled "Off Camera", which documents the film's behind-the-scenes and soundtrack recording sessions in a detailed and informative way. There are never-before-seen photos of extremely good taste that show Elvis reaching the top of his career, memorabilia, posters and covers of releases in other countries and countless information.
