Elvis' Gold Records, Volume 4 is Elvis' 56th LP for RCA, his seventh greatest hits compilation, and the fourth volume of the Golden/Gold Records collection. The album covers seven B-sides from singles that sold Gold between 1958 and 1967, plus five Top 40 hits recorded at RCA Studio B in Nashville and Radio Recorders in Hollywood.
Although he had remained a popular artist since the release of "Elvis' Golden Records, Volume 3" (1963), charting eight Top 10 albums and 17 Top 40 singles, Elvis' reputation had faded since his heyday. The compilation "Elvis for Everyone!" (1965) was his first to sell fewer than 300,000 copies, and his last five soundtrack albums became progressively worse sellers until they sold fewer than 200,000 copies. Singles were no longer reaching the Top 40, and although the recent "Big Boss Man" had sold 350,000 copies, that number fell short of the 500,000 needed to qualify for Gold status.
"Elvis' Gold Records, Volume 4" comprised five Top 40 A-sides, along with seven B-sides, five of which had also reached the Top 40. Three songs had not been written expressly for Elvis: "Love Letters" came from the 1945 film of the same name; "Witchcraft" was a 1956 recording by The Spiders; and "What'd I Say" had been a Ray Charles classic in 1959. Three B-sides ("Lonely Man", "A Mess of Blues", and "Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello") were old enough to be included on Volume 3, and another B-side ("Ain't That Loving You Baby") came from an impromptu June 10, 1958, session designed to augment his stockpile of recordings while the star was serving in the United States Army in Germany.
Although it sold well, this volume would only total 400,000 copies; better than his last soundtrack albums, but well outside the mark set by its three predecessors. The future of Elvis' career was certainly in question at this point. One contributor to it was the fact that the first three volumes of Gold Records covered two to three years of single releases, but there was a five-year gap between the previous album and this one, which would be the last in the series issued during Elvis' lifetime; "Elvis' Gold Records, Volume 5", which would include singles from 1969 to 1977, would be released posthumously in 1984.
By 1968, the practice of releasing LPs in mono sound was being phased out. As a result, RCA issued very few copies of this album in this format, which are considered valuable collector's items. The original 12-track work was first issued on CD by RCA in 1990, and the 1997 reissue added six tracks, including the hit "Viva Las Vegas". In 2016, FTD released their version of the LP with remastered audio, alternate masters and outtakes, and the original mono album as a bonus.

FTD VERSION
