Elvis is Back! is FTD's forty-fourth CD. It contains tracks from the original 1960 album, singles, and outtakes from the March 20–April 4, 1960 sessions at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee. The CD is currently out of print with the label.
During his final months in the Army, Presley worked on new sounds and improving his performance, and also prepared material for his first Nashville session, which was scheduled to take place upon his return.
On March 20 and 21, 1960, the singer recorded with his original band The Blue Moon Boys, minus bassist Bill Black, and utilized the techniques for improving his breathing and expanding his range that Charlie Hodge had taught him. RCA Studio B had recently been equipped with a new three-track recorder, and to further enhance Presley's vocal recording, Telefunken U-47 microphones were installed. The first song recorded was Otis Blackwell's "Make Me Know it".
The original musicians returned to the studio on the evening of April 3, joined by saxophonist Boots Randolph. Presley opened the session with "Fever", followed by a reworked version of "O Sole Mio" now titled "It's Now or Never" which required all of Elvis' strength and technique to reach the final note, "Girl Next Door Went A-Walking" and "Thrill of Your Love". "Are You Lonesome Tonight", scrapped for the album and released as a single, was followed by "I Will Be Home Again"—a duet with Charlie Hodge—and the session concluded in the early hours of the 4th with Lowell Fulson's "Reconsider Baby", with Presley playing lead guitar on his Gibson Super 400.
Released on April 8, 1960, "Elvis is Back!" was Elvis' first album upon his return to the United States after serving two years in the army in Germany, his tenth LP for RCA, and the label's first release of all previously unreleased material, since none of the tracks on the LP were sold. Instead, the label focused on releasing songs recorded solely for the purpose of being singles during 1960. The first single from the album, "Stuck on You", was released two days after the recording with "Fame and Fortune" on the B-side, attracting 1.4 million pre-orders, and was Presley's first single to be released in stereo.
In 2005, FTD remastered the album and released it with part of the recording sessions on a double CD. Once again, the label surpassed itself and surprised with one of its best works. Even with the limitations of the scarcity of material at the time, it did a great job of recovering some takes and remastering the singles released that same year. The booklet is rounded off with a 16-page booklet featuring a wonderful selection of photos and memorabilia covering the period 1956 to 1960, including rare behind-the-scenes stills from his four films to date.

In 2012, Follow That Dream released a 268-page book covering the history of the album "Elvis is Back!" and the program "The Frank Sinatra Timex Special - Welcome Home, Elvis!". It gave details of the recordings for both works and contained dozens of previously unpublished photos from the period. As a bonus, FTD made available a CD with the original Masters of the LP "Elvis is Back!" in mono.
