Originally, Girl Happy was Elvis' fourteenth film and soundtrack album, and his 29th LP for RCA. Excluding the 1963 singles compilation "Elvis' Golden Records, Volume 3", it was his sixth consecutive soundtrack album.
Girl Happy is FTD's twenty-fifth and ninety-first CD. It contains the original 1965 album remastered and 12 alternate takes recorded on March 18, 1962 at RCA Studio B in Nashville, and June 10–16, 1964 at Radio Recorders Studio B in Hollywood. The CD is currently out of print with the label.
Originally, Girl Happy was Elvis' fourteenth film and soundtrack album, and his 29th LP for RCA. Excluding the 1963 singles compilation "Elvis' Golden Records, Volume 3", it was his sixth consecutive soundtrack album.
Eleven songs were recorded and, for the first time, all of them were used in the production and on the LP. To circumvent some royalties, "Yeah, She's Evil!", originally released by Bill Haley & His Comets on the Decca label in July 1964, was renamed "The Meanest Girl in Town", a resource often used by Parker when it came to making a profit at all costs.
"Do the Clam" was released approximately a month before the album as a single, peaking at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remaining on the chart for eight weeks. Its B-side—an unused track titled "You'll Be Gone", written by Elvis with Red West and Charlie Hodge—came from the March 18, 1962 session for the "Pot Luck with Elvis" LP and was the only song from that period that had not yet been used.

In late 1965, RCA decided to release "Puppet on a String" with "Wooden Heart" on the B-side as that year's Christmas single. Upon its original release, the album reached number eight on the Pop LP charts. The LP was certified Gold by the RIAA on July 15, 1999.
The original LP had its playback speed increased by 8% for a reason that is still unknown. While some believe that an error in the mastering process caused the speed of the tracks to be higher than normal and, due to the rush caused by the short time that RCA had to cut and edit the dozens of songs that Elvis was regularly recording for his soundtracks, this was never corrected, others believe that the record company did this process consciously thinking about bringing Elvis' sound closer to that of the idols of the "British invasion" that at that time dominated the American music market.

This possible error appears in both the film and its soundtrack album in a notable way, and even FTD did not correct the problem in its 2003 version of the work, which marked the first time it was re-released. After realizing that it had listed Take 4 of "You'll Be Gone" as the Master, Follow That Dream decided to re-edit the album to correct the mistake and re-released it in 2010 with exactly the same content.
