Double Trouble is Elvis's twenty-fourth soundtrack album and his 54th audiophonic release (including EPs and singles). The recording sessions took place between June 28 and July 14, 1966, at MGM Studios in Hollywood, California.

After the enthusiasm of his Gospel album "How Great Thou Art", recorded the previous month in Nashville, the rushed and uninteresting soundtrack for "Double Trouble" sent Elvis back into depression and into producing forgettable records for forgettable films. Even the release date chosen for the LP would be unfortunate - the same day that The Beatles' immortal album, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", hit the stores, as well as David Bowie's debut album.

Presley usually insisted on working in the comfortable confines of a regular studio and avoided the big movie stages, but budget-conscious MGM executives insisted on moving the soundtrack recordings to their own compound after the first night of work at Radio Recorders. A frustrated Elvis dutifully carried on, but the final straw was having to sing "Old MacDonald", which sent him storming out of the session after finishing a very short take of "Long Legged Girl (With the Short Dress On)".

Nine songs were recorded for the film, totaling only 17 minutes of material, a very short time for a standard LP. To increase the length beyond the 20 minutes required for an album, three tracks recorded at the May 1963 "lost album" sessions were added as extras. Two of these ("Never Ending" and "Blue River") had already been released as B-sides to singles. The fourth bonus song was "It Won't Be Long", recorded for the film but not used.

"Long Legged Girl (With the Short Dress On)" would be released as a single in late April, before the film's premiere, and would peak at an anemic #63 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album would prove to be a failure as well, peaking at #47 on the year's charts and becoming Elvis' first soundtrack LP not to reach the Top 20.

In 2004, FTD released their own edition of the album, which contained a large number of alternate takes and remastered versions of the original Masters, although they erred in keeping the false echo added to the band's sound on some songs. The alternate takes include the excellent early versions of "Long Legged Girl (With the Short Dress On)" and take 10 of "There is So Much World to See". To top it off, FTD also released an 8-page booklet with memorabilia, album covers from around the world, behind-the-scenes photos and special information.
