Elvis On Tour is the first official soundtrack release from the 1972 film of the same name. It contains complete rehearsals from March 1972, four complete concerts from April 1972, and a Blu-Ray of the film with remastered audio and video.
Elvis On Tour, originally titled Standing Room Only, was the 33rd and last Elvis' movie. The film explores the backstage of Elvis' April 1972 performances, the pace of recording and rehearsals, and the fan hysteria that made him the King of Rock, all beautifully captured by Robert Abel and Pierre Adidge, and perfectly edited by none other than Martin Scorsese.
In its theatrical release on November 1, 1972, Elvis On Tour raised half its budget. By the time it left the main theaters in the USA, the film had doubled its budget and reached the 13th place on the most watched charts, being nominated and winning a Grammy for Best Documentary in 1972.
At the time, a soundtrack was not possible due to several factors and, in large part, RCA's lack of planning. After canceling the LP "An American Trilogy" because it contained live tracks that would be repeated on the album referring to the film, RCA went through a series of setbacks until it decided to invest in the shows at Madison Square Garden and cancel another album, "Standing Room Only". Thus, nothing was released on audio to promote the film.
Years passed and RCA never seemed interested in releasing an album referring to Elvis On Tour, so FTD was responsible for providing the first works with that content. 2001's "6363 Sunset" was the label's first CD to give a taste of the March 1972 recording sessions. It was followed by unreleased rehearsals also from March of that year on "Elvis On Tour - The Rehearsals" in 2004.
After that, nothing more was heard about any new release for a long time, until on August 12, 2022 Sony Legacy announced the first official work on Elvis On Tour. And to the delight of fans who value the story and the best quality audio, the label announced that the release would be a box with 6 CDs and a Blu-Ray.
The first three CDs of this set feature the officially unreleased concerts of April 9, 10 and 14, 1972, respectively; that's Hampton Roads and Richmond, Virginia; and Greensboro, North Carolina. The fourth CD features the April 18 concert in San Antonio, Texas, previously released on the 2003 "Elvis: Close-Up" box set, but which was recently remixed for this release.
Tour rehearsals constitute CDs five and six. CD 5 contains the recordings from March 30, 1972 and CD 6 brings the tracks recorded the next day, containing unreleased versions of "For the Good Times". These are virtually unreleased, although some tracks were previously released on "Elvis On Tour - The Rehearsals".
Counting concerts and rehearsal songs, the box brings 145 tracks to the fans - 91 previously unreleased.
The Blu-Ray documentary exists because filmmakers Pierre Addge and Robert Abel hit the road with Elvis to narrate this tour. In addition to the on-stage performances, the Golden Globe-winning film for Best Documentary includes behind-the-scenes footage, fan hysteria and the singer's routine. This is a special version released on VHS and Laserdisc in the early 1980s and re-released by Warner Home Video in 2010 on DVD and Blu-Ray.
