Girl Happy is Elvis' seventeenth soundtrack album, his 29th LP for RCA and 43rd audiophonic work (including singles and EPs). Recorded in June 1964 at Radio Recorders, its content includes the soundtrack to the 1965 film of the same name.
Excluding the singles compilation "Elvis' Golden Records, Volume 3" from 1963, this was the sixth consecutive soundtrack album. Eleven songs were recorded and, for the first time, all were used in the production and on the album. To circumvent some rights, "Yeah, She's Evil!", originally released by Bill Haley & His Comets on the Decca label in July 1964, was retitled "The Meanest Girl in Town", a feature often used by Parker when it came to profit at all costs.
"Do the Clam" was released approximately a month before the album as a single, reaching number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remaining on the charts for eight weeks; "You'll Be Gone", the only unreleased track from the March 18, 1962 session for the "Pot Luck with Elvis" LP, was its B-side. "Puppet On a String" would be released as a single on Christmas 1965, with "Wooden Heart" on the B-side.
The original work had its execution speed increased by 8% for a reason unknown to this day. While some believe that an error in the mastering process caused the speed of the tracks to be above normal and that RCA did not want or did not have time to correct it, others believe that the record company carried out this process consciously thinking of bringing the the sound of Elvis to that of the idols of the "British Invasion" which at that time dominated the US music market.
Upon its original release on March 1, 1965, the album reached eighth place among the most purchased pop LPs. The possible error in recording speed, which appears in both the film and its soundtrack LP in a notable way, was maintained in the first re-release of the work by FTD in 2003. The record company corrected the speed in an upgrade of the album, released in 2009.

With the task of making the first re-release of the album since 1965, FTD invested heavily in new editing and equalization techniques to deliver an old and not very popular work with a new look and sound. The first difference is in the audio, which has been remastered and edited to feel more open, creating a stereo remix that truly delivers on RCA's never-fulfilled promise of a "Living Stereo" sound. Furthermore, an adequate distance was also created between the band, backing vocals and Elvis' voice, giving the three factors their prominent places without trampling one another.
Due to errors in its own matrix, FTD remade and re-released the album in 2010. After realizing that it had listed Take 4 of "You'll Be Gone" as the Master, Follow That Dream decided to re-edit the album to correct the mistake and re-released it with exactly the same content and improving, although almost imperceptibly, the audio.
