Elvis' Golden Records, Volume 3 is Elvis's 38th LP for RCA, his fifth hits compilation and the third volume in the Golden Records collection. The album covers the 12 singles that earned Gold ratings between 1960 and 1962, featuring eight Top 5s and four B-sides that reached the Top 40, recorded at RCA Studio B in Nashville and Radio Recorders in Hollywood.

In the early 1960s, Colonel Parker envisioned a marketing strategy where alternating soundtrack albums with independent studio recordings, accompanied by singles, brought excellent profits. But by mid-1963 studio albums were struggling to stay on the charts while soundtracks were wildly successful.

As the sessions at the end of May 1963 failed to produce enough cohesive material for an independent album, these tracks became singles and were included on soundtracks, in addition to the 1965 compilation "Elvis For Everyone!". The immediate solution was another compilation of Gold singles, and the sales figures would prove the success of this tentative strategy.

Released on August 11, 1963, the LP comprises eight Top 5 A-sides and four B-sides that also reached the Top 40, namely "Fame and Fortune", "I Gotta Know", "Little Sister" and "Anything That's Part of You". Five A-sides, namely "Stuck on You", "It's Now or Never", "Are You Lonesome Tonight", "Surrender" and "Good Luck Charm" had reached number 1 on the charts. As with the other titles in the series, all singles on this compilation are certified by the RIAA as Gold for sales of at least 500,000 copies.

The original 12-track album was first published on CD by RCA in 1989. The July 15, 1997 reissue added six tracks, two album tracks, two songs originally issued on EPs, another B-side and the hit single "Can't Help Falling in Love". As the modifications had little effect on sales, the album was reissued again in 2004 to remove the bonus tracks and restore the albums' original running time and track positions.

FTD released its version of the album on november 15, 2015, with remastered audio, alternate masters and outtakes.

Just as Parker and RCA had trouble finding something to release in 1963 that wasn't part of a soundtrack, FTD also had to spend overtime mining to get the material for this release.

It's not the label's custom, but here it uses Alternate Masters to complete an acceptable number of tracks for a double album. Concluding the work, the label includes a three-sided folding cover and a booklet with 12 pages of information, photos and memorabilia.
