Follow That Dream is Elvis' fifteenth studio album on RCA and his ninth soundtrack album. The songs on the EP, featured in the film of the same name released on April 11, 1962, were all recorded in a single session on July 2, 1961 at RCA Studio B in Nashville.
Of the six songs recorded for the film, Elvis insisted that its worst song in his opinion, "Sound Advice", be omitted from the release when RCA assembled the soundtrack. His wish was granted, but it would be placed on the "Elvis for Everyone" compilation in 1965 due to lack of new material. The sixth song, "A Whistling Tune", would ultimately go unused and be saved for the next movie, "Kid Galahad". Presley sang a few lines from "On Top of Old Smokey" in the film, but the recording was made on the set and was not put on the album.
This quality issue would remain a sore point in his soundtrack material for the remainder of his film career.
Issued as an EP, it was released on April 8, 1962 to coincide with the film's premiere on the 11th of that month. The record sold very well, especially for an EP in the sixties. The title song went to Top 40 radio play and reached number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, becoming a Platinum recording. The EP was number one in the UK for 20 weeks in 1962 and was certified Gold and Platinum simultaneously on March 27, 1992 by the RIAA.

Follow That Dream (FTD) always looks to outdo itself with its releases and it was expected that they would try even harder on this one which inspired the label's name. However, this was not the case. The reasons are clear: the lack of material recorded for the film, which has only six songs.
The booklet for this release is the real treasure of the album. With rare behind-the-scenes photos and memorabilia, it shines far more than the audio, which at times seems to be of lesser quality than some bootlegs. Elvis is seen with his natural hair color and very relaxed in all the photos.

Just like previous releases of books with a soundtrack as an extra, this one also brings the details of what happened in the months and days that permeated the film and album recordings.
In this case, the focus is on the summer of 1961 and the making of "Follow That Dream" and its soundtrack, with hundreds of newspaper articles, interviews with cast, crew and locals, as well as depicting scenes that were cut from the final edit of the film in over 200 stills taken directly from the original negatives.
The bonus CD includes a reissue of the original EP in mono and new tracks, plus 7 Masters (including the then-rare stereo version of "Angel") and two demos.
