Something for Everybody is Elvis' thirteenth LP on RCA Victor. Recording sessions took place on November 8, 1960 at Radio Recorders in Hollywood and March 12/13, 1961 at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee. The album is one of the most notable in Elvis' discography, but one that has songs that are least known or remembered by fans.
Upon his release from the army in March 1960, doubts about Presley's ability to regain the momentum of his 1950s career were put to rest. During that year, his three singles had topped the charts, and his first album, Elvis Is Back!, went to number 2 on the charts. His movie "G.I. Blues" had been extremely successful, and the soundtrack album would also reach number 1.
Excited, he entered the familiar Studio B in Nashville and recorded eleven songs for this album in a 12-hour session, plus the single "I Feel So Bad". The single was initially slated to be the twelfth track on the LP, but Elvis chose "I Slipped, I Stumbled, I Fell", after RCA executive Bill Bullock scrapped the Colonel's idea of selling "Wild in the Country" along with it as a single, to promote the film that would hit theaters the following month. The track that appears in the film but had not been commercially released thus became the last track on the album.
Apparently, the idea was quite right. In the United States, the LP reached number 1 on Billboard's Top Pop LPs. The album was certified Gold on July 15, 1999 by the Recording Industry Association of America.
The 1999 CD edition included six extra tracks, four singles and two B-sides recorded within a year and issued in 1961 and 1962, with the running order of the songs changed. All sides made the Top 40 at a time when Billboard was starting to list B-sides as well, and two of the singles, "Surrender" and "Good Luck Charm", topped the genre chart. The entirety of this reissue appeared on the Legacy Edition of "Elvis Is Back!" in 2011.
In 2006, "Something for Everybody" was re-released on the Follow That Dream label as a special 2-disc CD containing the original tracks along with numerous alternate takes. A double LP from the label brought a few more rare outtakes to the public in 2014, the same year the mono version of the album was made available by the label on "Memphis to Nashville '61". The complete recording sessions were finally released by FTD alongside the Master and recording sessions for "Wild in the Country" in 2020.
