His Hand in Mine is Elvis' twelfth album on RCA and the first of three Gospel works in the format. Recording sessions took place on October 30 and 31, 1960, at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee.
Elvis had a fundamental and lifelong love of Gospel music, and he often used it to rehearse and relax before concerts and at the beginning of recording sessions. Presley had already dedicated an EP, "Peace in the Valley", in 1957, to his love of religious music, and was eager to record a full-length album of this genre. This fitted in well with the Colonel's plans, who wanted to steer his client towards a more familiar image while shifting Presley's career focus from the stage to Hollywood stardom.
All selections for His Hand In Mine were completed in a fourteen-hour session between October 30 and 31, 1960. On the same occasion, the songs "Surrender" and "Crying in the Chapel" were recorded, which were kept until they were released as singles; "Surrender" would be their first single of 1961 and would rank on the Top 10 chart, but "Crying in the Chapel" would wait until April 1965 to be issued, going to number 3 on the charts.
One of the album's most successful songs, "Swing Down, Sweet Chariot" (not to be confused with the popular "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot") was covered for the soundtrack to the 1969 film "The Trouble with Girls". The song "In My Father's House" was arranged and adapted by Elvis, who published it under Elvis Presley Music.
His Hand In Mine peaked at number 13 on the Top Pop Albums chart of 1960, was certified Gold on April 9, 1969, and Platinum on March 27, 1992 by the Recording Industry Association of America. In 1976, RCA reissued the album in their "Pure Gold" series, with new cover art but containing the same tracks as the original version.
On March 11, 2008 the label released a remastered version of this album on CD, adding as bonus tracks the four songs that originally appeared on the 1957 EP "Peace in the Valley". FTD issued an extended version with two CDs in 2006, a double LP in 2012, and made the complete recording sessions available in 2021.
