Heartbreak Hotel was Elvis' third EP on RCA. It contained three tracks recorded at RCA in 1956 and one from 1955 at Sun Studio.

When Elvis signed to RCA Victor on November 20, 1955, he could barely imagine what the future of his career would look like.

On January 10 and 11, 1956, Elvis went to RCA Studio B in Nashville to record the first 5 tracks in his new home. His first single for the label, "Heartbreak Hotel / I Was the One", quickly reached 1 million copies sold while still on pre-order. It was an astounding result, given that RCA had never achieved such a feat with their other artists and that rock 'n' roll was still something new.

New sessions on January 30 and 31, 1956 captured another six tracks, which included "My Baby Left Me", which became the B-side to the "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" single on May of that year, and "So Glad You're Mine", which would be out of the releases until the LP ELVIS on October 19, 1956.

At the end of January, RCA had 7 new tracks - not counting "So Glad You're Mine" - and five previously unreleased songs from the Sun Studio period, which were added to the previous ones to create the iconic ELVIS PRESLEY album, released on 23 March 1956.

After spending the beginning of the year focused on promoting Elvis' first album on RCA, the label decided to turn their eyes to the hugely successful "Heartbreak Hotel" as a single.

The EP "Heartbreak Hotel" was then released on April 20, 1956. Opening with the title track, recorded at the January 10, 1956 session, the work had its A-side closed by "I Was the One", obtained the next day and used as the B-side on the original single. "Money Honey", also captured on the 10th, was one of the most remembered tracks on the ELVIS PRESLEY LP and couldn't be left out on this release. Closing the B-side of the EP, RCA put Elvis' most successful track at Sun Studio, "I Forgot to Remember to Forget", released on the last single on Sam Phillips' label and first re-release on RCA still in 1955.

O EP had great notoriety and all of its tracks were re-released within the Gold Standard series on September 30, 1958.
