Milkcow Blues Boogie is Elvis' third work. It contains two tracks recorded in the iconic 1954 sessions at Memphis' Sun Studio. It was re-released by RCA under catalog number 47-6382 on January 23, 1956.

After the great success of his first two albums in the Memphis area and in the South in general, Elvis became more popular on radio shows and festivals in the region. Starting in October 1954, his name was the most anticipated at several local fairs and the headlining attraction of The Louisiana Hayride, where he remained performing until late 1956.

Times were changing and Elvis was getting too big for the humble Sun Studio; soon news that would leave the country open-mouthed would be on the front pages of the nation's main newspapers.

But before fate conspired to create the biggest star the world would ever see, Elvis was still under contract with Sun and excited to make new recordings. Although most of the songs captured in the early sessions had yet to be released, Sam Phillips insisted that Elvis should do his versions of classics and current hits as quickly as possible, in order to maintain his rising star status.

After two months without recording, Elvis, Scotty and Bill entered the Sun Studio on Monday, November 15, 1954, for a short session. From it, two songs were immediately used, being the ones that would give title to his new single - "Milkcow Blues Boogie" and "You're a Heartbreaker". The third song captured that day was a slow version of "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone", which would only be released posthumously.

On its release, the single was a moderate success, but it still kept Elvis in the focus of interest of the country's then biggest record label.
