"Stay Away / U.S. Male" (Feb. 27, 1968)

Had it existed, Stay Away, Joe would have been Elvis' 26th soundtrack album and would have covered the songs he recorded for the production, released in theaters on March 8, 1968.

With no other leftovers to include on the proposed album, the only option would have been to invest in an EP almost a year after that format had gone out of fashion and been abandoned by major artists. To avoid this, RCA chose not to release all the songs, focusing solely on selling a single of "Stay Away" with "U.S. Male" on the B-side, on February 27, 1968. The remaining songs would be released on budget LPs over the next two years, except for one, released only in 1994.

It's no secret that Elvis was tired of his movies and their soundtracks by 1967. Being forced to record "Old MacDonald" in 1966 for "Double Trouble" had already been a major insult that had made Elvis reevaluate his situation and want a better career path, but this clearly depended much more on Colonel Parker's desire to "lose" the 50% profit on the soundtracks than on Elvis' own. A sea of bad songs would invade Elvis' shores from then on, drowning out any potential hits, such as "City by Night" (from "Double Trouble" itself), "Guitar Man", "Big Boss Man" (both from the "Clambake" LP), and "Hi-Heel Sneakers" (the B-side of the "Guitar Man" single).

The soundtrack to "Stay Away, Joe" would be no different. There wasn't a single commercial song in the entire production, something that irritated Elvis and worried even the Colonel and RCA. "Dominick", sung to a bull, was the final straw; it caused the King of Rock to beg Felton Jarvis to never release it, as had happened with "Old MacDonald". Jarvis kept his promise, but it was released in 1994, long after his death, at RCA's initiative.

"Goin' Home", which was perhaps the most recommended single, ended up being removed from the film and included as a bonus track on the "Speedway" soundtrack LP, the next in line for release. "Too Much Monkey Business", from the same session as the aforementioned song, would have been another strong contender, but it would only be added to the budget LP "Elvis Sings Flaming Star" in 1969. For the first time, it was clear: change was needed.

Although all the tracks had been released previously, either officially or on bootlegs, it was only with FTD's work that they reached the market together and with quality sound.

The CD consists of songs from the film and the 1968 singles, which make up the album, largely thanks to Jerry Reed's dedication to transforming all the tracks he contributed to with his guitar into unique listening experiences. The varied outtakes are the heart of the release, portraying an Elvis in high spirits due to the joyous moment in his life. To complete the album, FTD offers a tri-fold cover and a 16-page booklet with photos, memorabilia, recording dates, and behind-the-scenes information.
