Christmas with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is a compilation of re-recordings of Christmas songs present on the LPs "Elvis' Christmas Album" from 1957 and "Elvis Sings the Wonderful World of Christmas" from 1971.
2017 marked the 60th anniversary of "Elvis' Christmas Album" and since then, Elvis' interpretations of time-honored secular themes have become an integral musical component around the world at Christmas.
The album topped the Billboard 200 for four weeks in 1957 and remained a constant figure on the charts for years and years to come, selling over three million copies. The 1970 reissue on RCA's Camden label was certified Diamond by the RIAA, becoming Elvis' best-selling work and the best-selling seasonal record of all time.
Seeing the success of the 1970 reissue, RCA practically forced Elvis to record a new Christmas album for the following year. "Elvis Sings the Wonderful World of Christmas" featured great interpretations of secular Christmas classics and from pop culture and, even without the same impact as its predecessor, the LP even topped the Billboard Christmas Albums Chart that year; had it been included on the Billboard 200 (which from 1963 to 1973 did not admit festive records), the work would have easily reached the Gold certificate at the time, but the long-awaited status would only be achieved in 1977. The record gained prestige over the years, becoming 3x Platinum in 1999.
With the arrival of the 60th anniversary of "Elvis' Christmas Album" and after the success of the CDs "If I Can Dream - Elvis with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra" and "The Wonder of You - Elvis with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra", from 2015 and 2016, respectively, that featured re-recordings of classics from the King of Rock, RCA Records and Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony, would not pass up the chance to renew the material - and Elvis' audience too - at Christmas parties.
Again with support from The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the record companies began new recordings in January 2017. Classics from the aforementioned records have been reimagined with sublime new arrangements at Abbey Road Studio 2 in London, where The Beatles recorded some of their greatest hits.
"Christmas with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra" was released on CD, LP and digital formats on October 6, 2017. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard Classics Chart and had a total of 6,000 sales on its first weekend.
A deluxe CD version was released on 24 November of the same year containing 4 bonus tracks, making the work reach number 6 in the UK charts. On December 8, 2017, the record was certified Gold.
