Kissin' Cousins
is Elvis' fourteenth soundtrack album, his 20th LP for RCA and 40th audiophonic work (including singles and EPs). The album features the songs heard in the film of the same name and studio extras from the aborted May 1963 sessions.

Since the sessions for "Viva Las Vegas", which took place before the recording of this soundtrack, were well over budget, the Colonel determined that for the sake of fiscal prudence new songs should be recorded at Studio B in Nashville, far from Hollywood and its distractions, and with a platoon of available musicians.

Furthermore, the new demand for enough songs to fill soundtrack LPs, now a regularity as EPs and singles were becoming less and less salable, caused Elvis' usual songwriters to pull double duty, with the trio Giant / Baum / Kaye signing five of the twelve songs on the album.

Ten songs from the score were recorded by Elvis with members of the Nashville A-Team during two late-night sessions in September, with two distinct versions by different songwriters of the title track, one (titled "Kissin' Cousins") recorded with Presley's normal voice. and another (titled "Kissin' Cousins (no. 2)") with a hillbilly accent. The first version of "Kissin' Cousins" would be issued as a single on February 10, 1964, with "It Hurts Me" on the B-side, and would reach #12 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming a Gold record.

As with the "Fun in Acapulco" soundtrack, two additional tracks, "Echoes of Love" and "(It's a) Long Lonely Highway", the latter of which would later be used on the soundtrack for the 1965 film "Tickle Me", were taken from the aborted May 1963 sessions and added here to bring the running order to twelve tracks. "Anyone (Could Fall in Love with You)", included on the album, was omitted from the film. "Pappy, Won't You Please Come Home?", performed by Glenda Farrell (dubbing the voice of Dolores Edgin), is included in the film, but was omitted from the album.

Kissin' Cousins has been re-released numerous times by RCA over the years. On November 2, 2017, FTD finally released their version of the album, one of the only soundtracks that had not yet been worked on by the label in its 18 years of life. Two years later, Follow That Dream presented Elvis fans with a double LP of the soundtrack.
